Project Overview:

The Etten-Leur site began its zero waste journey in 2013. In 2017-2018 the site adopted and implemented the requirements of the TRUE certification for zero waste program, and was GOLD certified mid 2018. The program seeks for continuous improvement and this is reflected in many smaller and larger initiatives for the site. Efficient use of ingredients and packaging materials is a key element in our daily operation and many equipment and process improvements have been implemented to reduce our material losses.

Examples of these initiatives by the personnel on waste reduction include the site initiating two smaller projects in our company restaurant to reduce the amount of waste generated there. First, is a project to separate collection of plastic bottles and cans with a refundable deposit, the collection of plastic wrapping materials, drink cartons, and the collection of food waste. The earnings from the deposits are then donated to the World Wildlife Fund.

The second project is the reduction of disposable coffee cups, which amounts to over 208,000 pieces (>1.090 kg) per year, by providing reusable tea and coffee cups and a dishwasher for cleaning. Our waste reduction program reflects how everyone working at the Colgate/Hill’s Etten-Leur site cares about our environment and adopts a zero waste mindset.
“By 2025, we aim to achieve 100% TRUE certification for our global operations, including manufacturing sites, technology centers, strategic offices and owned warehouses,” says Ann Tracy, Chief Sustainability Officer. “With enthusiastic teams, collaborative partners and this comprehensive approach to waste reduction, we’re confident we can make it happen.”
